1st Indian Derivatives Conference 1997
Bombay, 10th to 12th December 1997

1997 saw the dawn of the derivatives industry in India. In the liberalised Indian economy, enhanced price volatility often generated significant hardships for economic agents. In this situation, derivatives in the area of equity, currency, commodities and fixed income could have a valuable role to play in the economy in reducing the risks that market participants face. The First Annual Indian Derivatives Conference brought together, for the first time, the disparate components of India's nascent derivatives industry. The event included eight workshops in twin tracks, a two day conference and a financial technology expo. The expo featured SIMEX, NSE, NSDL, Reuters, Bloomberg, JCS, Ritechoice, SBIMF, CMS and Mastek.

The conference proceedings were being published as a book titled "Derivatives Markets in India " by Tata McGraw-Hill and Invest India. This book contains a foreword by Mr. Leo Melamed, Chairman Emeritus, Chicago Mercantile Exchange who released the book at IIEF's fund management conference in April 1998 at Bombay.
